Autumn Equinox - Mabon - September 21-23
Tags: Autumn Equinox Mabon Wheel of the Year Harvest Thanksgiving Parsifal

to celebrate Wheel Of The Year Festivals is an ancient tradition in many cultures.
Long before Christian thought gripped the world, lived and celebrated our ancestors 8 Festivals during the Year.
These Festivals have their origin in the Cycle of Nature, the changing Seasons and the passage of the Sun and Moon.
So we celebrate the 4 Sun-Festivals, the Winter Solstice (longest Night of the Year, December 21), the Summer Solstice (the longest Day of the Year, June 21), but also the Equinoxes in Autumn and Spring.

parsifalrain, September 18

The harvest of the year is brought in, the work of the summer is done.
Silence returns in a time of gratitude and regeneration.
For the second time in the Year reigns of special state of equilibrium in which day and night are of equal length - Everything is balanced.

We are again at a turning point.
From now on the days get shorter, the nights longer.
Nature withdraws gradually and preparing for hibernation.

It is the time in which we harvest all ripe fruits and thank for the gifts of nature - we celebrate Thanksgiving.
Mabon is a time to honor the spiritual significance of harvest, sacrifice, and survival.

It is a festival of abundance, colors and pleasure.
Music and dance are included as well as the children's laughter and a wonderful feast of fresh fruit, cereals and nuts.
Also sharing belongs to Thanksgiving.
What we have too much, we give others who have not a plenty of it.
For us personally Thanksgiving is a good opportunity to look inward, to come to rest and to contemplate in retrospect to the past year.
We may thank for all that was given to us last year.
We thank ourselves for everything we have worked and done.
But we must also make provisions for the winter - separate us from burdensome and provide real necessities importance.
It is the time we spend at home in front of the warm fire with a cup of tea.
It is the time when we reflect, talk with each other, come to rest and thoroughly into our inner.

the Nature
Before the Nature completely withdraws, it shows itself once again in a very special wealth and splendor.
Many crops come to maturity now and we can look forward to fresh potatoes, pumpkins, carrots and turnips.
Also the fruit is ripe and we can harvest apples, plums, pears, and finally the wine.
Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and elderberries provide us with the most important vitamins, strengthen the immune system for the winter.
Hazelnuts and walnuts are ready to strengthen our body with essential fatty acids.
But it is not only the time of harvesting, but also the time of processing, preserving and warehousing.
We have to create inventories for the Winter, so that it can be also survived.
The fruit is cooked, the vegetables are stored.
The collected herbs are made into teas and elixirs, which are used in winter as an important remedy.

At the end of September, the Nature withdraws more and more.
The leaves begin to change color, most of the plants have formed seed to ensure they survive the Winter, where they apparently die.
Many animals stuff themselves, create important winter supplies, or say goodbye to warmer zones of Earth to survive the Winter.
In the morning is often a mist over the country, it is cool and moist.
It is the time of the Indian summer, in which draw the fibers of spider through the country.
The all burning force of the August-sun is barely noticeable.
Rather, it is a golden, slightly warming light that strengthens us.
Everything indicates that we are facing a very difficult time, which is considered to outlast.
And yet shows us the Course of the Year that it continues again and again that there is no life without death and that everything is always recurring.
However, we must learn to live with the times and these also again to esteem stronger.

meaning of the Festival
For our ancestors, who had neither technical harvest hands nor freezers available, September, the harvest month was of particular importance.
It was an incredibly lot of work and it was important that the weather gods were well disposed and supported a successful harvest.
Of course, it was believed also that the Earth Goddess was responsible for a rich harvest, so because of their offerings like baskets of fruit, ears of corn, twigs or cornucopias were made and many thanks festivals were held.
The Goddess were the best fruits and nuts sacrificed so that she would care in the coming Year for a good harvest.
This Thanksgiving Festivities began to Autumnal Equinox and lasted till the next Full Moon.
The once youthful vegetation God withdraws to the Otherworld.

themes of the Festival
What I want to thank from the heart ?
How my personal harvest turned out this year ?
Which seed I sowed and nurtured and what 'life - fruits' I was able to harvest ?
Where and how I experience in my life a state of equilibrium?
How to achieve a balance between give and take ?
How can I prepare for the dark Season of the Year, what I need to let go ?
What will strengthen me and vitalize ?
How can I follow the rhythm of nature ?
Where should I draw the balance ?
What I want to carry on in my Life, which I have to say goodbye and disconnect.

the astrological perspective
In September, the change from the Virgo sign in the Libra takes place.
The Virgin is one of the Earth signs, with Mercury as planetary ruler.
The themes of the Virgin are earthiness, health awareness and often an increased sense of order.
For Autumn Equinox the Sun enters the sign of Libra.
Now we are in the sign of Harmony and Balance.
It follows the time of weighing and integrating - the exact checking what is important in Life.
Libra is an Air sign - in her prevails the planet Venus.
Many natives of Libra are trying to live as harmoniously and offset as possible, in particular beauty.
The deeper meaning of this desired equilibrium is perhaps in accepting besides the bright side, the dark side of people.
A really nice man has depth.
And this depth includes the darker side of the human soul.
But in Libra is also about the ability to put himself in the needs of others and empathize.
It's about understanding of other people, to a balance of power and to tolerance.

customs of the Festival
In farmer's almanac was the 29th September of Michael's, so Michaelmas as the beginning of winter work, which consisted of spinning and weaving in the first place.
This work lasted until February 1, Candlemas.
In the spinning room worked diligently, but sung and spoken.
The grandmothers shared their life experiences and were at that time than the wise old women.
So spun and wove the women - like the Goddess of Destiny herself - the future of the family and the village !

Indian Summer

Just in September the Indian Summer is often clearly visible.
The spiders weave their threads, which covered with dew, coat the whole land.
According to earlier stories, these are the threads of fate that were woven from the spindle of Holla.

The Goddess who spins the thread of life and also weaves the fate of people, also appeared the women sometimes in the late evening and helped them at work.

Goddesses and myths of the Feast
For Autumn Equinox the archetype of the Goddess who knows the laws of life and rules over life, death and rebirth gets the meaning.
Also the Harvest Goddess and Goddess of Agriculture were honored.

In Celtic the Festival is also called 'Mabon', which means 'Big Son'.

The mother of Mabon was Mordon, patroness of the 'Other World'.
It is the Earth herself.
From story-wise it was so that the little son Mabon disappeared from the earth, when he was only three nights old.
His mother, the earth, suffered greatly.
She searched for him everywhere.
but has been found Mabon of three animals, namely a blackbird, a deer and an owl.
They found Mabon in the Otherworld - the abdominal cavity of the Mother Earth.
This is an enchanted place, but also a place of challenge.
And only in such a place the Son of the Earth could be reborn as a Son of Light.

In Christian belief
And later, Jesus who was resurrected after 3 days.

In Greek, a similar story is told.

Demeter sacrificing grain at the altar on vaze figure, National Archaeological Museum Athens
The story of Demeter and her daughter Persephone.
Demeter's daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades and taken to the Underworld because he could not find a woman who voluntarily went with him to the Underworld.
Demeter was full of sorrow and pain - everywhere she sought her daughter, but she could not find her anywhere.
She raged, cried, complained, begged for mercy, but nothing helped.
Finally furious anger accrued from her grief and she cursed everything was fertile on Earth.
'Die, die, die!' she screamed, and from now on no more children were born, no wheat flourished any longer and no bud opened further - the people and animals threatened to starve.

The earth itself died.
Demeter sat by the well and shouted into her daughter's name.
Here comes another Goddess to the plan: The Goddess Baubo.
She is the Goddess of Humor, the irrepressible laughter and vulgar jokes.
She rides on a sow, which is a very ancient symbol for birth and rebirth.
Baubo rode to Demeter, dancing wildly, wiggling her breasts and told her a few dirty jokes.
Demeter was herewith awakened from her grief and first began to laugh again.
According to history, both Goddesses were sitting by the fountain and laughed that they were shaking their bellies.
They laughed until for Hades it became unbearable, and so he set Persephone free again and she returned to the surface to her mother.
Although it was not allowed to remain throughout the year on top of the Earth, because Persephone had eaten already food of the Underworld (a few [Punica granatum] pomegranate seeds).
But she was able to spend at least two thirds of the year with Demeter on Earth.
The other third of them had to live in the Underworld.
Demeter had given her approval.
She was happy again and regained her zest for life, and so also the Earth, the people and the animals were fertile again and no one had to starve.
